Gigamon Helps Secure Military Networks in Remote Hot Spots

The daily commute for most involves a simple car or public transportation ride to a nearby office or work site. For others, like one Gigamon customer – a Department of Defense (DoD) subcontractor – it’s more complicated.

This customer’s elite team of network incident response and computer forensics experts fly wherever they are needed around the globe, often at a moment’s notice. Their mission is clear: identify and neutralize cyberattacks against their clients as quickly and efficiently as possible. Their travel “baggage” allowance is also clear: the smaller, the lighter, the better.

Given the remoteness of many of their work sites, which can include ships or tents in war zones, there was no room for error – or bulk – when it came to building a tactical fly away kit. It had to be lightweight and portable while also containing everything necessary to spot and mitigate network vulnerabilities in real time.

To meet this unique challenge, the customer chose the GigaSECURE Security Delivery Platform and GigaSMART for advanced traffic intelligence, including NetFlow and other network metadata generation. Designed to provide security tools with only relevant data – versus flooding them with raw packet streams – the GigaSECURE Security Delivery Platform helps the customer to quickly pinpoint the location of a possible network compromise without causing performance issues.

As an additional benefit, the solution is certified. All the computer equipment and software that this subcontractor connects to DoD networks must first pass the necessary federal government testing and accreditation, including compliance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Risk Management Framework, FIPS 140-2 and DoD Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG). Not only does Gigamon have several federal accreditations in place, but we also have the expertise and experience to help guide customers through their processes. Or in this case, offer an out of the box and into a fly away kit solution that helps our customer’s elite team take cybersecurity wherever it’s needed: land, sea or air.
