Recapping Day One of AWS re:Invent 2021

Today was the first full day at AWS re:Invent 2021 in Las Vegas, and wow, what a day it was! The turnout was huge, and I want to give a big shoutout to the conference organizers for their extra work enforcing health safety measures such as proving vaccinations and strict mask rules.

Four takeaways from day one:

  • Security is top of mind with nearly every cloud person I’ve spoken with. While that can be said about on-prem datacenter workloads, cloud has an extra level of “I don’t know what I don’t know” uneasiness.
  • Observability is hot. Adoption is growing in both the broader customer base and wider use cases.
  • Metrics, events, logs, and traces (MELT) is excellent for monitoring but is not enough for security.

Those three takeaways lead to my fourth point: Network intelligence provides great value to observability tools with hundreds of security use cases.

Does that mean you can dump your current cloud network security tools? No. However, it does mean that your observability tool of choice becomes another important layer in your cloud defense in depth.

Lots more to come over the next two days. If you are at this event, do come by and see a demo at the Gigamon booth #1527.
